Francis Barraud

The Liverpool painter and photographer, Francis Barraud, was born in 1856. Today, he is primarily known as the originator of the HMV Listening Dog logo. The dog in question apparently had the name "Nipper" and Barraud acquired the dog on the death of his own brother. He painted a picture of Nipper after the dog's own death and the painting was then sold to the English Gramophone Company, but only after the machine in the picture had actually been altered to correspond to one of the firm's own models. Francis Barraud died in 1924.
