Janet Curtis

Janet Curtis was born in 1959 and grew up in the North Pennines, County Durham. She holds a First Class Honours Degree in Surface Design from Cleveland College of Art & Design. The childhood influences which she believes may have inspired her artistic career came principally from her grandparents. Her grandmother was a wonderful embroiderer and also made ‘Durham Quilts'. Her grandfather was a shoemaker and Janet Curtis's earliest memories are of expressing herself by playing with scraps of their materials and creating images with them. She now lives high in the North Pennines, and finds that living remotely and very close to nature is a constant inspiration in her artistic work. Her art employs lots of colour, mark-making and experimentation with mixed media, including painting onto fabric and incorporating embroidery. Her hobbies away from the easel include fell-walking and her dogs.
