Heywood Hardy

Heywood Hardy was a painter and etcher of animals, portraits, genre and sporting subjects. Born in Chichester in 1842 into a family of artists, his father was James Hardy Sr. and his brother James Hardy Jr. His artistic studies took him to Paris and Antwerp, but eventually he settled in London in 1870. Hardy exhibited at the principal London galleries, mainly at The Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours. In 1880 he was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Shortly afterwards he returned to his native Sussex, where he died in 1933 at the age of 90.
