David Martin

David Martin was born in 1736 at Anstruther, in Scotland, and is best known as an excellent painter of portraits and as a great engraver. He studied under the great Scottish artist, Allan Ramsay, and even visited Rome with his tutor. In 1755, he settled down in Edinburgh, where he built a successful career before he married and moved to London. On the death of his wife, he moved back to Edinburgh. David Martin engraved a great amount of his own work, which is now displayed in museums around the world, ranging from Edinburgh to Victoria, in Australia. David Martin died in 1798 in Edinburgh.
