Peder Monsted

Peder Monsted was a noted Danish painter of landscapes and portraits, renowned particularly for his naturalistic ‘plein air' scenes and his skill in conveying the clarity of light. Born in Balle, in eastern Denmark in 1859, Monsted studied at the Copenhagen Academy of Art, before undertaking an extensive tour of Europe to broaden his artistic scope and widen his experiences. During his life, he continued to travel extensively, both in Europe and North Africa, and many of his greatest works feature the landscapes of the countries he visited. However, Monsted's reputation lies today mainly with the success of his beautiful views of the Danish landscape and his depiction of its beech forests and coastlines. Peder Monsted died in 1941.
