Colin Paynton

Colin See-Paynton is an eminent watercolourist and wood engraver. In 1972 he moved to a remote farmhouse in Wales, onto which he built his studio. Entirely self-taught as an engraver, he began to make prints in 1980 and has since produced over 250 editions. Increasingly, Colin Paynton's work is based on the meticulous observation of the natural world. He uses his knowledge and imagination to construct engravings of complexity and refinement and the patterning and layering of his images is always intriguing. His later compositions, often from an underwater viewpoint, use an increasingly abstract and fluid line to capture the fast, fleeting movements of his birds and fish. Colin Paynton is an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers & Engravers, a Member of the Society of Wood Engravers, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a Fellow of the Royal Cambrian Academy. He has won awards in 1998 from the RSPB and Society of Wildlife Artists and at the National Eisteddfod in 1985 and 1986. His work is extensively exhibited, in both group and solo exhibitions, either in traditional artistic venues like the Royal Academy or in more unusual locations like the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Slimbridge. He has published over 10 books.
