Leonard Raven-Hill

Leonard Raven-Hill, the English cartoonist and illustrator, was born in Bath in 1867 and studied at the Bristol School of Art and the Lambeth School of Art, working with Ricketts and Shannon. He also studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under Bouguereau and Aime Morot. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy. He founded "The Butterfly" in 1893 and worked for "Punch" from 1896 until his death 1935. It is therefore not surprising that much of his work, including the Bridge Problems series, contains humour and witty characterisations which eloquently describe a past era.
