Carl Schweninger the elder was born in Vienna in 1818 and became famous as a painter of animals, landscapes and genre scenes. After completing his education, he travelled across Europe before returning to settle in Vienna, where the museum now holds many of his greatest works. Schweninger died in Vienna in 1887.
