Wouterus Verschuur

Wouterus Verschuur Snr, a painter of landscapes, battle scenes and, particularly, equestrian images, was born in Amsterdam on June 11th, 1812. As a painter, he settled briefly in many areas of The Netherlands but lived principally in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Influenced in his equestrian work by the seventeenth century Dutch master Philips Wouwermans, he became the pupil of van Os and Steffelaar and won the Felix Merits award in 1831 and 1832 from the prestigious Living Artists Exhibition in Amsterdam. Verschuur's work is held in public collections across Europe. He died in 1874.
