The richness of Lavery’s studio with its wonderful window to provide light is the antithesis of the horror of a bombing raid against the City of London where Lavery lived and painted. The mixture of fear and excitement is created by the young girl kneeling on the couch, she is looking out of the window and wondering what exactly were going to be the targets of the day. The beautiful sunlight and warmth of the day evidenced by the window all contribute to the sense of serene beauty being threatened by the First World War.
