A very unusual subject for Montague Dawson. It still depicts his passion for water. He lived most of his life in Hampshire and this painting depicts a scene of total peace and tranquility. Two friends, who have gone for a day's fishing and, perhaps, are about to land a fish. The line is taut, both figures are very attentive to what is happening in the water and the viewer can imagine that supper is about to be provided, perhaps with a barbeque on the banks of the river, as the sun begins to set. The reflections in the water from the large tree, the gentle ripples and eddies are all testament to Dawson's great skill as an artist.
