Rodin was a prolific draughtsman and drew from life incessantly, producing some 10,000 drawings. Drawings, rapidly made and keenly observed, were the often the initial stage of his figure sculpture. The draughtsman’s oeuvre developed in tandem with the sculptor’s. His preferred practice was to record all the model's profiles and to observe the body from different heights, even from a step ladder on occasions. This drawing depicts a woman laying on her front with her back to the viewer. The view is taken from above the figure and without any background details the body lays in a strange position. The role that Rodin’s drawings played in his art were by no means minor. The sculptor himself said at the end of his life, “It’s very simple. My drawings are the key to my work.”
