Canaletto found that providing formulaic paintings for tourists was very lucrative. Well-bred tourists wanted to have a reminder of Venice not as a stage decoration with ghost-like shadows and sultry skies, but as the ideal Mediterranean city. They admired attractive, beautiful and above all recognizable buildings, harmoniously arranged and painted in soft colours under a bright blue sky with the merest hint of a white cloud as seen in ‘Ducal Palace Venice’. The buildings are depicted accurately and in some considerable detail. The Ducal Palace was built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice, northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. There is obviously an active rationalism behind Canaletto’s orderly approach to the laying out of this scene, with every object observed from reality but arranged in an almost numerical sequence.
