Allom is chiefly known for his numerous topographical works, which were used to illustrate books on travel. From the 1820s onwards, he traveled extensively through the UK and mainland Europe. This illustration is from Istanbul, Turkey. Mosque of Bajazet is depicted on the left. Moving right, the Seraskiers Tower can be seen, which is a 85 metre tall fire-watch tower. Moving along the scene there is Yeni Jami, Sultimanie, Mohomet, Selim, and finally, to the far right, the tower of Galata are all clearly visible. The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata quarter of Istanbul , just to the north of the Golden Horn. One of the city's most striking landmarks, it is a high, cone-capped cylinder that dominates the skyline and offers a panoramic vista of Old Istanbul and its environs.
