Description
In the 80’s Klineman created paintings entitled “Fashion Portraits”. The series started by painting over an Yves Saint Laurent scarf on a canvas. Over the next year, Klineman took all her saved treasures of clothing and accessories from her closet and made paintings of them. When Klineman first showed her series of “treasured clothing and accessories”, the critique was, “These are portraits of you with your clothing, hence, they were named, “Fashion Portraits”. Through the 80’s, Klineman asked her friends who were designers, writers, artists, musicians and celebrities for items of their clothing or an accessory for her to paint a portrait. Betsy Johnson gave her worn in pink leather lace-up boots, Michael Jackson gave the leather boots he wore in his “Bad” video, Blondie gave a Stephen Sprouse punk outfit she wore on stage and Andy Warhol gave his glasses. How splendid that Andy Warhol chose his glasses, ones he wore in the 70’s, to give. Klineman feels as though, in some magical way, she can see the world and her art through his eyes.
