Description
The drawing stands at the pinnacle of the artist’s achievement with the pencil. It is a key masterpiece. The three classical areas of space – foreground, middle-distance and the background – are rendered with a surpassing strength and subtlety, moving from the magnificent, rich, velvet tones of the foreground, through the half-tones of the succeeding area of space in which are set the houses and figures, to the soft, melting far distance contained in a shimmering haze of industrial smoke. Volume, space and atmosphere are created with powerful strokes of the pencil, and deft finger and thumb smudging, a technique which derived from the artist’s work in the antique and life classes of Manchester College of Art. Consider the literal drawing of the buildings and, by contrast, the impressionistic rendering of the figures. The composition is stunningly daring and the whole work a synthesis of every shade of technical mastery from tightly controlled, to brilliantly free, loose drawing.
