Description
This was a very historic boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Luis Angel Firpo. It was the first time that a Latin American fighter would challenge for the World Heavyweight Title and it was also one of the defining fights of Dempsey`s career. The fight took place on September 14th, 1923 at the Polo Grounds in New York City and it is reputed that 80,000 fans paid to see them fight live. Dempsey scored a knockout victory in the 2nd round, after a most gruelling and powerful fight in which both fighters could have won at an earlier stage in the contest. The painting depicts Firpo dropping Dempsey through the ring`s ropes and for some people, his 2nd knockdown of Dempsey in that fight was named `the most dramatic sports moment of the 20th century`, but that accolade was given in 1950, so only half way through the Century.
