Endymion was a handsome, young shepherd prince loved by the moon-goddess Selene. When Zeus, the king of gods, offered him a choice of destinies, Endymion chose immortality and youth in eternal slumber. He was lain in a cave on Karian Mount Latmos where his lover the Moon would visit him each night. As Endymion was a shepherd his profession provides justification for him to spend time beneath the moon. Selene who is represented as a fairy in Grimshaw’s interpretation of the story can be seen hovering over Endymion, watching him as he sleeps. Grimshaw was a Victorian painter and often painted classic stories of gods because they appealed to his market.
