Grant Wood

Artist Biography:

Grant DeVolson Wood was an American painter born in Iowa. He is best known for his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest and his iconic painting is entitled "American Gothic". In the mid 1920's, Wood made four trips to Europe, where he studied many styles of painting, especially Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, but it was the work of the 15th Century artist, Jan van Eyck, that influenced him to take on the clarity of the technique and to incorporate it in his new works. Wood studied for a time at The Handicraft Guild which was an art school run entirely by women in Minneapolis and he also helped found Stone City Art Colony which was designed to help artists get through the Great Depression. He used to lecture throughout the United States on the subject of regionalism in the arts.
