This was produced as an advertising poster for the Champagne House of Ruinart, located in Rheims in Northern France. The House of Ruinart was founded in 1729 by Nicolas Ruinart and this is the oldest established Champagne House. Nicolas` uncle, Dom Thierry Ruinart, a Benedictine Monk who was a close friend of the famous Dom Perignon, was a learned and well-travelled man whose acquaintance with aristocratic circles and Royal Courts of Europe, made him one of the first to anticipate the commercial potential of sparkling Champagne. Ruinart has had a long-standing relationship with the arts and in 1895, Andre Ruinart asked Mucha to illustrate a poster on Ruinart and hence this picture was created as a commercial brief.
