Description
This beautiful world map features a double hemisphere embellished with cartouches, ships and sea monsters. It is considered to be one of the great examples from the golden age of Dutch cartography. Its decorative borders include vignettes of the four elements: Fire by Apollo; Aeros, the goddess of Air; Mother Earth, surrounded by flora & fauna; and Water by a siren and sea monsters. Portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, Jodocus Hondius and Gerard Mercator are also included. In the map itself, there is an early appearance of Australia's Northern Coastline and California is shown as an island. Hondius and his partner Jan Jansson issued this map to compete with Willem Blaeu using details from both John Speed and from other Amsterdam contemporaries.
