Description
Herbert Dicksee lived very near to London Zoo (then known as the Zoological Gardens), which gave the artist the perfect opportunity to study the animals that he loved. Dicksee’s love of animals developed during his period of study at The Slade School of Art, when he used to rise at six o’clock in the morning to visit the zoo before visitors would arrive and obstruct his view. There he could be seen, morning after morning, making studies of the lions and tigers in the reposeful intervals of their restless movements. In fact, almost all Dicksee’s studies of big cats were made at the zoo, whilst for the backgrounds of the animal’s original habitat, he would often refer to photographs. Dicksee was meticulous about the study of anatomy and would obtain casts of legs and limbs from dead beasts in order to accurately portray them. His etchings of majestic lions were instantly popular and are now ranked as some of his best works.
