Lady Hazel Lavery was born in 1886, she was a painter and the second wife of the artist Sir John Lavery. ‘Lady Lavery’ was completed in 1910. It depicts Lady Lavery painting a canvas on an easel whilst holding her paint palette. She is outside in the country with an umbrella protecting her and her artwork from the sun. She looks to have been caught in a moment as she looks from her painting at the viewer. She is wearing a beautiful pale dress and dark hat. The soft muted colours create an idealized vision of her and the countryside. Hazel was Lavery’s most frequent sitter having more than 400 portraits done. She was one of the great beauties of the times and her portrait appeared on Irish banknotes before the introduction of the euro in 2002.
