Description
The painting captures the atmosphere of late 19th Century London with the Neo-Gothic splendour of St. Pancras Station and the recently re-opened Midland Grand Hotel dominating the skyline. The horse drawn omnibuses and trams in the foreground represent what was then a recent innovation in London's public transport system. The first horse drawn trams were introduced in 1861 but it was not until the 1870's that they began to spread and the line along Pentonville Road opened as late as 1883. A wonderful evocative picture of Victorian London.
