The teal, anas crecca, is the smallest extant dabbling duck at 20-30 cm in length. It breeds in temperate Eurasia and migrates south in winter. Outside the breeding season, it is a highly gregarious duck and can form large flocks. It is commonly found in sheltered wetlands and feeds on seeds and aquatic invertebrates. Small numbers of teal breed throughout most of Britain and Ireland, but the duck is most common as a winter visitor. The teal is the United Kingdom's smallest duck, and is the smallest common surface-feeding duck.
