Black Knight was a black Pekinese dog, who was inseparable from his owner, Violet , Alfred Munning's wife, who took him everywhere with her in a black velvet handbag. Violet wrote 'The Diary of a Freeman', ostensibly Black Knight's own memoirs detailing his social outings to the Lord Mayor's Banquet and royal Garden Parties. It was a frontispiece for this tome that Alfred Munning completed this touching painting. When Black Knight died in 1955, Violet had him stuffed and so continued to carry him everywhere.
