This painting is taken from Matisse`s Moroccan series where he captures the light, colour and exoticism of North Africa. The picture depicts St. Andrew`s Church in Tangier. The green pantile roof against the cobalt blue is absolutely wonderful. The church was built at the very end of the 19th Century and is adorned with The Lord`s Prayer in Arabic around the nave. The palm trees accentuate the North African feel and the original title of this subject is `Landscape Viewed from a Window`, painted in 1913.
