Description
Paul Klee was a great admirer of children's art, primitive art and deeply influenced by music. Although his styles are sometimes referred to as expressionism, surrealism or abstraction, he generally liked to work independently, coming out with his own interpretation of trends. Zitronen represents a period of time when Klee used geometric forms, symbols and figures, applied to dreamlike coloured backgrounds. In Zitronen, he creates blocks of colours that lie side by side in a variety of shapes. Black lines were then added on top and the viewer can see how geometric patterns, symbols, such as hieroglyphs, animal and human shapes are all, potentially, added to the image.
