The waters and beach at Biarritz provided lifetimes of economic opportunity, originally as a premier whaling port and then as a vacation get-away for Europe`s royal families and well-to-do society. The water itself was reputed in the 19th century to possess healing and therapeutic properties and the light-hearted sense of the women and children all comfortably dressed with heads covered with hats, are clearly enjoying their stay at the beach. In this fine example of leisure, the sense of fun and enjoyment is beautifully captured by the artist with perhaps a mother and daughter in the foreground and another mother and daughter walking in the shallows and the sense of everyone enjoying the atmosphere and the holiday spirit.
