Description
Holder’s forte was his depiction of Caribbean women and men, ‘Sea Bathers’ depicts groups of people swimming and playing in the sea. Sea bath is how the West Indians refer to going for a swim. This image captures the essence of the local community all enjoying a public holiday or weekend together. The figures are offset against the blues and greens of the sea, which illustrates what a great eye Holder had for colours and shape. In the 1960’s, there were many black people who did not see themselves as beautiful, but Boscoe did, and his paintings encapsulated this before the phrase ‘black is beautiful’ was coined.
