The Labrador Retriever was bred originally as a gun dog, but is now perhaps the most popular pet in the world. By a large margin, it is the most popular breed by registration in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Black Labradors are particularly associated with the sporting world and the countryside life, but the affable, energetic and intelligent nature of the breed in all its variants makes it ideal also for ‘official’ work with organisations like the police and associations for the blind. There are three recognised colours for Labradors: black, chocolate and yellow, the latter of which can be anything from light cream to an almost foxy red. Different coloured puppies can potentially occur in the same litter. Labradors make good pets because they are well balanced, bright and not particularly territorial or aggressive. They are good with children and generally very gentle; a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it. However, they do have a reputation as being very chewy puppies!
