A charming example of morally charged Victorian painting, My Lady is a Widow and Childless serves as a reminder that wealth alone cannot secure lasting happiness. As a gardener is greeted at work by his wife and adoring young children, his employer watches sadly, knowing that the joys of family life are beyond her reach. This moving painting was executed in 1874. It is likely that its success gave a considerable boost to Stone’s fortunes, for he was to become an Associate of the Royal Academy two years later, before becoming a full member in 1886. The painting’s lasting popularity was reflected in its acquisition by Christopher Forbes, whose family’s collection of Victorian art was one of the very finest in the world. This remarkable painting was one of those to which the media tycoon was forced to bid an emotional farewell, when a large portion of the collection was sold at auction in February 2003.
