This image depicts an idealized vision of the Indies and Native American civilization from an 18th to early 19th Century European perspective. This imagined scene reflects a romantic European interest in these territories which were being discovered all the time. Designs like this allowed the wealthy to escape from reality by bringing the beauty of nature and the exotic into the interior. This artwork is probably created by using hand block-prints and would be one panel in a series of scenes making up panoramic wallpaper. Block-printed panoramic wallpapers were developed in early 19th century France and called: Papiers Peints Panoramiques. The wallpaper was often hung in hallways or dining room to give a trompe l’oeil effect.
