Frank Moss Bennett is best remembered for his prolific range of historic genre paintings that were set in the seventeenth and eighteenth century England, though he lived well into the mid 1900's he chose to look at the past for his artistic inspiration. Painting this type of retrospective genre scenes brought about much commercial success to Bennett. ‘The Hunter’s Breakfast’ depicts four huntsmen in their red coats having breakfast around a table outside in the yard of a coaching inn. The men are all seen to be enjoying themselves, discussing stories with the inn keeper. The hounds can be seen in the background and another huntsman is stood with his horse. It shows an everyday scene but is quirky and full of character. Bennett aspired to achieve historical accuracy in his paintings. He would use the furniture that he himself had designed, restored and made in his pictures, and would dress his models in historical costumes, of which he had a very large collection.
