This stunning work of art is produced, in accordance with the artist’s customary technique, using only the labels taken from bottles of fine wine. Both red and white wines are produced in Bordeaux; red Bordeaux is generally called “claret” in the United Kingdom. The region is based around the town of Bordeaux in south-western France and is the second largest wine-growing area in the world. The Gironde estuary and its tributaries dominate the area and the limestone-based soil and oceanic climate combine to make an excellent environment for growing some of the most highly regarded wines in the world. Many of the greatest names in wine-making come from Bordeaux and included amongst them are the five premier cru (first growth) red wines, established by the famous Classification of 1855: Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour, Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. Most wine produced in Bordeaux is red, but there are some notable sweet white wines including Chateau d’Yquem.
