Description
The famous “blue marble” images of the Earth were first created by NASA, which worked to put together the most detailed true-colour image of the Earth from countless observations by satellite of land and sea, cloud and ice. The NASA “blue marble” was based on information collected between June and September 2001 and combined, or composited, every eight days to compensate for clouds which might have blocked the satellite’s view on any single day. MODIS, the sensory device which gathered the information, was flown 700 kilometres above the Earth’s surface on board the Terra satellite. Other data was incorporated including, for instance, elevation shading based on records collected by the US Geological Survey and records of Antarctic sea ice coverage supplied by the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
