This 'digital painting' was created for the book which David Hardy produced with astronomer Patrick Moore, entitled “Futures: 50 Years in Space” (APPL, 2004/2006). It shows the Sun passing behind the Earth as seen from a passing 'Apollo asteroid'. Apollo asteroids leave the main asteroid belts between Mars and Jupiter and can occasionally cross Earth's orbit. In the painting, Earth’s atmosphere forms a 'ring of fire' around the planet as a result of the same effect that makes sunsets red and the ruddy light which is generated illuminates the cratered surface of the asteroid in the foreground.
