This painting is possibly painted in New Forest. Marjorie is the little girl holding the collie and Dolly Brennan is the taller girl. Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum said ‘The anecdote told by A Tempting Bait needs for its amplification no text. The academic laws of composition are fulfilled in the careful arrangement of the group of children balanced by the large mass of high light (the pony). There is a faint complementary colour balance between the dresses of the two younger girls – made unobtrusive by the interposition of a grey-blue dress. The artist has carried on the tradition of a highly finished, botanically accurate foreground’. This was the first of twelve works to be reproduced by Bovril which were obtained by collecting coupons on Bovril jars.
