Landscape was an important and recurring theme in Lowry’s work but the peace and the tranquillity of earlier studies changed in the 1930s. Possibly as a result of the distress he felt at his mother’s illness, he began to paint the so called ‘lonely landscapes’ which are mirrors of the artist as much as expressions of desolate countryside.
