This painting depicts two men fighting in the street in a comical way with one man pulling the other mans bowling hat down on his head. Lowry spent many years studying the figure. He had private lessons in the early twentieth century and he attended art school as a part time student until 1928. The eye is drawn from one character to another and each individual invites one to muse on their reason for being present at the fight. Lowry has set the scene with a very pale background, that is framed by a door way and fence. He only used 5 colours of oil paints which were Ivory Black, Flake White, Prussian Blue, Ochre and Vermillion.
