Holder’s forte was his depiction of Caribbean women. This is a typical portrait by Boscoe Holder, painted during his years in Trinidad. The use of the background colour to offset the white dress and headdress illustrates just what a great eye he had for colour, shape and passion. The quiet beauty of the lady, her purity of thought and vision and her quiet reflectiveness are all captured in his own inimitable and brilliant style. The viewer is left to use their imagination as to what are her thoughts but, in any event, the picture brings a sense of peace, tranquillity and quiet, which is the antithesis of modern life.
