This painting was produced by the artist in 1881. It depicts peasants and a flowering Chestnut Tree and the original French title is `Le Marronnier en Fleurs`. Renoir left Italy in 1881 to continue his self-education in the grandeur and simplicity of the ancient painters. This was one of his most prolific periods and is harmonious in style with `The Seine at Chatou`, also painted in 1881 and `The Railway Bridge at Chatou` from the same year.
