Renoir probably painted this scene around 1899 when he moved to the South of France because of his arthritis. He settled first at Cannes, not too far from St. Tropez. This little fishing village (now a fashionable resort) attracted numerous high-profile artists during the 20th Century because of its landscape and light. Renoir used a quick spontaneous style with fast and fluid brush-strokes to capture the feeling of light, brightness, warmth and the enjoyable atmosphere of the beach.
