A Corniche is a road cut into the edge of a cliff, especially a cliff running along a coast. Monaco is a tiny Principality, located on the Mediterranean in the corner of South Eastern France and very close to the Italian Border. In 1884, this would have been simply a track for horses and horse drawn carts and various forms of stagecoaches. The Corniche still exist today in a much more modern version and there are actually two Corniches, one known as the Grand Corniche and the other known as the Moyenne Corniche, the Grand being the higher of the two. This is a typical Monet scene, capturing the essence of the countryside and the strong cliffs next to the sea.
