This painting was produced about a year prior to the death of the artist. He was a most famous practitioner of impressionist philosophy to express one`s perception before nature. In his latter years, Monet suffered from failing sight and in 1923 he underwent 2 operations to remove his cataracts. It is suspected that after surgery, he was able to see certain ultra violet wavelengths of light that are normally excluded by the lens of the eye and this may have had an effect on the colours he perceived.
