This painting is one of the few still lifes executed by the artist and was originally owned by the Parisienne art collector Moyse Dreyfus. Cassatt had been introduced to him by her Impressionist friends and he became a friend and early patron. Cassatt included a portrait of him in her show at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition of 1879. Cassatt frequently painted elements closely related to home life. This aubergine vase filled with white and purple lilacs, is painted next to an open window most likely located in a greenhouse near her studio. This painting is a wonderful representation of the artist`s angular fluency and skilful academic painting style.
