Appledore Island is the largest of the Isles of Shoals, which are situated in the Gulf of Maine in New England. Technically, they are located very close to the Maine/New Hampshire border and they were first used for seasonal fishing camps by indigenous Americans and then settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. A popular summer hotel on Appledore Island by Thomas Laighton and Levi Thaxter. Levi`s wife Ophelia (they married when she was 15) became the most popular American female poet of the 19th century. She hosted an art`s community on the Island, frequented by a number of authors and the Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam.
