The original of this painting is in the Musee d` Orsay in Paris. Signac loved sailing and was always fascinated by boats and kept his own in St. Tropez in the South of France. La Rochelle is a city in Western France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, which forms part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Port is very historic and today still bustles with boats small and large, a sea front that is packed full of lively cafes, bars and restaurants and immediately behind the Port is the Old Town. The Port is dominated by three 14th and 15th century towers that stand tall at the entrance and has always been one of the Town`s greatest tourist attractions and one can guess that this is the reason why Signac painted this in his own inimitable and unique style.
