In 1923, some 25 years after Atamian sought refuge in Paris, Atamian visited Saint-Gilles-Sur-Vie in Vendee where he spent the Summer. He then returned regularly until 1939. These beach paintings became a recurring theme and consolidated his reputation as an artist. His subject matter became extremely popular during his lifetime and many of his works were reproduced as postcards. He especially enjoyed depicting children playing in the sand because he captured not only the luminosity of water drenched by sun, but also the charm of children playing in the 1920`s and 30`s.
