‘Below Stairs’ was painted for Goodall’s 1983 historical book ‘Above and Below Stairs’. The book is full of illustrations without text, exploring the contrast of the servants’ lives to their employers from the middle ages to the 1980s. This watercolour is set in the Victorian times and depicts three servants running down the stairs whilst holding crockery piled high in their hands. Two washerwomen are seen in the kitchen doing the washing and other chores as steam circles above them in the room. To the left of the kitchen in the hall way, the line of servant bells can be seen highlighting the constant request from their employers.
